International Conference: Philosophy of the Black Experience https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1754069 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1754069 The demand/struggle for racial equality, identity, and justice by populations racialized as Black (and other people of color) in the United States and anywhere around the world remain issues of pressing philosophical concern. The struggle for equality and justice requires not only theoretical articulations but also practical accounts upon which to make the demands. Thus, the contributions of the Black race and continent to global civilization need exploration, showcasing, and articulations because they are neither fully appreciated nor given due global recognition. Whether those contributions come from Black Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, or elsewhere, their historical understanding and relevance to contemporary concerns must be adamantly asserted to avoid further marginalization. This conference focuses on the philosophy of the black experience throughout human history to explore the significant contributions and denials of the black race in world civilization. The conference is a philosophical interrogation of black experience in global and national affairs; hence it welcomes papers in all areas of intellectualism that articulate the philosophy of the black experience in any area of human endeavors.

Dialogical Approaches to the Sphere ‘in-between’ Self and Other https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816129 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816129 The purpose of this special issue is to explore dialogical approaches to the sphere ‘in-between’ self and other. The emphasis is placed on the difference of perspectives, which influences not only how we understand ourselves as persons, but also how we acquire knowledge and interact with each other. Hence, the focus of the analysis lies on that through (dia) which dialogue takes place: the event of an intersection of multiple perspectives in an encounter that interrelates an ‘I’ and a ‘You.’ What is the epistemological significance of the second person perspective, which combines at least two standpoints in the sphere where language and reason (logos) ‘speak’ with or without words?

In particular, the methodological meaning of listening will be investigated in attending to the sphere ‘in-between’ the interlocutors as a way of relating to the world. Listening is an essential yet under-investigated dimension of the phenomenon and trans-disciplinary concept of ‘dialogue.’ In listening, pre-determined categories of ‘otherness’ are suspended in receptive openness. As such, listening holds a promise of unearthing new terrains of learning and knowing since it can provide us with unique insights that cannot be acquired through other senses. Moreover, dialogue including the art of listening to silence can function as an invitation to hear what cannot be heard acoustically.

Contributions may address, for instance, the following questions:

• What are the main differences between a first person-, second person-, and third person approach to the sphere ‘in-between’ self and other?

• How does a mutually rewarding dialogue combine listening, speaking, and being silent?

• What is the specific methodological meaning of listening (as in contrast to seeing, touching, or smelling) in certain concrete practices (e.g. playing music together or conducting a conversation, being involved in political negotiations, teaching, or offering therapy to a patient)?

• What can we learn through listening, and what kinds of insights can we acquire through it?

• Why does the language of everyday life link phenomena like conscience to the acoustic metaphors of a ‘voice’ or ‘call’ rather than visual metaphors? degruyter.com/opphil

• How is a listening with one’s ears (and other senses), i.e., a listening to sounds, related to a listening with one’s heart, i.e., a listening that also embraces silences and ‘resonances’ in the figurative sense, which are not (or not only) provoked by physical objects and their vibrations?

Authors publishing their articles in the special issue will benefit from:

· transparent, comprehensive and fast peer review,

· efficient route to fast-track publication and full advantage of De Gruyter's e-technology.

Because Open Philosophy is published under an Open Access model, as a rule, publication costs should be covered by so called Article Publishing Charges (APC), paid by authors, their affiliated institutions, funders or sponsors.

Authors without access to publishing funds are encouraged to discuss potential discounts or waivers with Managing Editor of the journal Katarzyna Tempczyk (katarzyna.tempczyk@degruyter.com) before submitting their manuscripts.

Revitalizing Science and Values - Conference https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1803158 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1803158 The arena of science and values has grown in size and prominence in recent philosophy of science. But debates about the role of science remain fairly limited in terms of both the scope of topics discussed and in the range of views expressed. The aim of this conference is to broaden the horizons of work on science and values, partly by making room for new (or new versions of older) ideas and partly by getting it to interact with other parts of philosophy.

In this spirit we invite papers which expand the boundaries of current work in the field, and/or that argue for views that are outside of the current mainstream. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Views bucking the trend towards value-laden science, and/or defending (new) versions of value-freedom.
  • Discussions aiming to bridge work on values in science and general value theory, especially political theory, political philosophy and moral philosophy.
  • Work seeking to connect literature on values in science to other core areas of philosophy of science, including confirmation, measurement and experimental practice, explanation, modeling and theory structure.
  • Work drawing connections between debates over values and science and topics in epistemology including the ethics of belief and moral and pragmatic encroachment.

Abstracts should be 500-800 words long and should be sent by November 30 to:

scienceandvalues2024@gmail.com

1st Pan African Logic Congress The logic of nature & the nature of logic in Africa https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816081 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816081 This congress aims to promote logic in Africa. It is focused on Nature in a double sense. Wildlife is very important in Africa, the flora and fauna are very impressive. This is the place where there is the highest number and variety of animals. And for this reason, the people especially in central Africa have a strong connection with nature. It is the opportunity therefore to reflect on the logic of nature and to examine to what extent it is different from the logic of the technological and industrial world (computers, artificial intelligence, and so on). This is a way therefore to challenge the very nature of logic. From this perspective, logic is understood in a very wide sense and in relation to all aspects of the world, natural and artificial. The purpose of this event is to reveal and explore different manners of reasoning embedded in African cults, myths, arts, religions, rituals, economic systems, traditional justice systems, and architectural systems. This congress  will enrich logical studies and their relative subjects like AI through elaborating  logical interpretations of different aspects of African cultures.

Rethinking Gramsci Montreal International Conference: Global Perspectives on Gramsci https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816086 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816086 How have Gramscian categories been appropriated in our global context and how do they continue to be relevant for the contemporary moment? With the spread of his ideas throughout the world, the name of Antonio Gramsci has acquired an impressively wide range of uses and meanings. Building on the experience of Rethinking Gramsci 2023, this year’s edition explores the reception and interpretation of Gramscian insights around the globe. It did not take long for Gramsci’s innovative interpellation of orthodox Marxism to transcend its original context and gain centrality within what would become Western Marxism. The reception of his ideas among the English Marxists, for example, helped to give shape to the cultural Marxism of figures like Raymond Williams and Stuart Hall. Furthermore, Gramscian ideas formed the foundation of Post-Marxist thought and practice, as expounded in seminal works like Mouffe and Laclau’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy. Subaltern scholars from South Asia, for their part, imbued Gramsci’s concept of the subaltern with new connotations and applications, while postcolonial thinkers gave regional inflections to his legacy and re-signified it within their own particular struggles. Rethinking Gramsci 2024: Global Perspectives on Gramsci intends to explore the myriad uses and meanings of Gramsci from various perspectives and contexts throughout the world. We encourage theoretical and empirical approaches from any number of possible standpoints, be they academic, practical, or artistic.

Philosophy of Neuromorphic AI https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816133 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816133 Workshop: Philosophy of Neuromorphic AI
There has been a long tradition of philosophers, cognitive scientists and computer scientists discussing philosophical implications of artificial intelligence. Since for the last decades von Neumann style computation has been the main paradigm, most of the discourse is centered around standard digital computation. However, with the advent of neuromorphic hardware many philosophical answers need to be reconsidered. Are implementations of AI algorithms on neuromorphic hardware mere simulations or rather replications of brain structures? Does the use of biologically inspired components yield new ethical implications? Or can neuromorphic chips be used to build embodied robots? This workshop attempts to answer those and more questions by bringing together scientists of different areas and career phases.

We are looking for participants

We are looking for researchers of all fields which are interested in philosophical issues surrounding brain-inspired computation. During the poster session (30th of May), there will be slots for posters. If you are interested in participating, need further information or have any kind of suggestions feel free to contact us via: johannes.brinz@uni-osnabrueck.de.

PHILOSOPHY & PRACTICE OF HUMAN EDUCATION https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816126 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816126 The interest of philosophy in questions related to education remains high. Indeed, in recent times it has found reason for further strengthening; and not only for the notable development of innovative technologies and diffusion of “technological culture”. The continuous transformation of society (in its political-cultural orientations, in its new working needs, in its changes in value and sensitivity) influences and pushes educational institutions to innovate and adapt. This does not necessarily have positive repercussions in terms of development and improvement of educational models and/or immediate responses in terms of change and improvement of the means and places where education is given.

New problems and needs arise and require a type of research, reflection and action that calls for very different disciplines to work at an interdisciplinary level: pedagogy, philosophy, sociology, psychology, neurology, linguistics, computer science and others. Old and new educational models and educational philosophies are called to rethink their characteristics and foundations, the contribution they can offer today in response to new needs and critical issues.

A vision of the educational function that accentuates the purpose of a professional training of the student and the young person, i.e. the issue of their “job placement” in adulthood, seems to be increasingly gaining ground. We move away from ideas – such as John Dewey and Maria Montessori’s ideas (among others) – which have focused holistically on the education of the child, with attention to encouraging the maturation of their moral and social, civic and cultural, even spiritual or psychological skills.

This issue of Critical Hermeneutics aims to invite scholars to analyze and consider different educational models – old and new models, focused on practical-operational skills and/or critical knowledge and capabilities, and/or the person as a whole etc. – in reference to the innovations, changes, critical issues and new challenges that society and education present today. We want to pay particular attention to new educational philosophies and perspectives that aim to (re)center the education of all individuals across the age span in a holistic and fully human sense.

The Ethics of Attention https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816068 https://www.apaonline.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1816068 This five-day intensive course investigates the ethical dimensions of attention. We live in the attention economy, where attention is commodified and manipulated. Attentional crises abound: big tech, social media, and the pandemic have eroded people’s attentional capacities. Attention, though, is paramount to personal and institutional flourishing. Attending to people, places, and projects is at the heart of love, community, justice, good relationships, creativity, art, education, and mental health. It is also a central, but overlooked, component of justice. We can wrong each other with attention patterns. Improper attention can also create unfair and dangerous social disparities; scientists might overlook medical differences between women and men, for example, and fail to notice this oversight. And yet theorists lack adequate frameworks for conceptualising and assessing this. There is a dearth of research on attention, and the ethics of attention is seldom featured in university courses.

The summer school aims to remedy this. Participants first survey major theories of attention, including Asian philosophy, analytic philosophy, and psychology. They then apply these frameworks to real-life case studies about technology, media, advertising, power, prejudice, bias, colonialism, art, love, religion, self-improvement, mental health, science research, and skepticism about vaccines, pandemics, and climate change.

The course is taught by leading thinkers in the philosophy of attention. Participants have the chance to present their own research, develop new ideas, and co-create new teaching resources on the philosophy of attention. This course is ideal for advanced PhD students and early career scholars in philosophy and related disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, media, and politics. We will also consider applications from mid-career and senior scholars.
